The confederacy succeeded before Abraham Lincoln even took office. He has been quoted by saying that if he could save the union without abolishing slavery, he would have done. The media would have recognized his oratory skills and his abilities as a uniter. Especially since the media is based in the north, it would favor Lincoln.

We live in a country where we get to vote, and that's wonderful, but there will always be a lot of idiots out there who don't do their homework!

I at least felt informed enough to make a valid decision on whom to vote for. These people didn't use any of the brains that God gave them to learn the issues. It just makes me sick!

LOL, JE. You're probably right. Lincoln would be ripped to shreds by today's left.

The comparisons between Obama and Lincoln are just downright insulting.

You obviously have not been reading the mainstream media! You should be singing the praises of Obama since he is basically being made out to be Lincoln part 2. (Now if you havent already heard that, then wipe the coffee you just spewed off your computer screen).
Today Lincoln would be reviled by the press for starting an unjust war leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of americans simply to hold together a group of states who wanted to leave the union.

I just finished reading 'Team of Rivals' (great book, btw), and I remember that Lincoln wasn't even sure his speech had impact; in fact he thought he had failed. The crowd was amazed to silence is all, and Everett was gracious to bestow his compliments the next day. Little did Lincoln know that these words would go down in history as one of the greatest speeches of all time.

If only there were men like Lincoln today....

To be fair, neither Bill Maher nor Jon Stewart are journalists by their own admission. They say what's funny, and they have no requirement to be fair and balanced. They are comedians.

Wow.

The gal with a pink sweater and glasses impressed me. She's at least attempting to learn, and self-aware enough to realize what she may not know.

NPR, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart - boy, now there's some seriously unbiased and objective journalism and entertainment.

The most perceptive and insightful line of the whole video: "I don't trust the media to know where that is coming from." You betcha!

I love re-reading the Gettysburg Address, it's one of my favorite speeches from American history. Thanks for posting this today. I how beautiful our language is, but sadly so many don't use it to its full potential any more.

Wow.... pretty big debate.

Note to PD: Sarah Palin originally did just what the base needed. It fired it up big time... Did you see that emotion before that? People were like dragging their feet about voting for Mccain. She served the purpose.

Now, why she hurt the campaign. Who said this "And I can see Russia from my house" Palin... Nope...Tina Fey.... Yep. Even though the clip on SNL was extremely funny it added to the idea that Palin was a joke.

Then 150000 clothes being taken by the media and run around everywhere did what the media could not do to her earlier. Ruin her appearance. Edited Couric interview, really badly edited to show her as a pinhead hurt her worse.

That is why Palin hurt the campaign. But it was already a lost year for The GOP

Not a Palin Shill but I do read constitutions.... That is exactly what Alaska is... The constitution unlike other states, the Land is the States, oil companies are only partners, not owners, partners. For years Oil companies where the majority on that area, Palin just changed who gets most the money.

As I said in my first comment, aside from offhand comments, he did not use the race card in the campaign. The crowd perceived it as a joke more than anything. The subsequent reporting blew it out of proportion. No one noticed when he had made similar comments before. His race was not a central part of his campaign. Like Mike Huckabee said, "As a Republican, I gotta tell ya, I am proud that our country is at a point where Barack Obama has gotten this nomination not because of his race or even in spite of it, but I think with indifference to it. We’re still a long way where we need to be as a country in terms of dealing with racism, but we have at least come far enough, and I’m glad I’ve lived long enough to see this moment."

Wow,are you seious??!! Brilliant piece?!!? Go ahead and feed yourself the idea that diversity is no longer needed and all races are ow on even playing fields..whatever it takes to get you to sleep at night. I had a well thought out diatbribe to refute the ridiculous notions expressed on this board, but I feel like common sense and morals would be lost on most of the people replying. So as you pay yourself on your hidden racist back, the real world has to deal with the ugliness.

I said he did not get into college through affirmative action; he admitted this himself. I was showing how he worked hard to get where he is.
I really recommend you listen to his "A More Perfect Union" speech in its entirety then. He addresses reverse racism in it without actually mentioning the term. In it, he mentions the fact there is a way that black people talk when they are only black people around, just as there is a way white people talk when only white people are around. He mentions "the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America". He has been critical of the black community just as much as he has talked about discrimination.
I think Condoleezza Rice said it best: "What I would like understood as a black American is that black Americans loved and had faith in this country even when this country didn't love and have faith in them — and that's our legacy". This goes through the mind of African Americans and their struggles, with stories from their parents and grandparents about their struggles. And part of this legacy still lives today. If we don't acknowledge and address the racism and discrimination in our society, then it will never go away.

All of his campaign contributions and spending must still comply with all federal campaign finance laws and FEC reporting requirements, so he is still following this law. $579,178,033, or 91%, have all come from individual donations. He has raised money from bigger donors and smaller donors nearly equally, getting much of it through the internet.
Interestingly enough, I remember Newt Gingrich complaining about this law and the irony it had affecting McCain's campaign, but I don't recall this act having a negative impact on his campaign, due to the fact that this was during the last two months of the election. There is still a lot of resentment in the Republican Party over this act, especially with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In the Illionois senate, he created legislation reforming ethics and health care laws. The Illnois police acknowledged he help to enact death penalty reforms.
With Dick Lugar, he created a law that expanded the nuclear proliferation threat reduction concept to conventional weapons. With tom Coburn, he created a law that established USAspending.gov, a web search engine on federal spending. With Senator Feingold, the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act, he created more transparency by increasing public awareness concerning lobbying activity and funding, places more restrictions on gifts for congressmen, and disclosure of earmarks on bills.
If you can't name three after following the election for two years, well, I don't know what to say. You watch one ad and you at least get one. You watch one policy speech and you'll at least get three.
