A guest post from Edgar Harris

With the Iowa caucuses behind us the Republican Primary is finally in full swing. Those of you in the Republican Party have to make a choice on who will challenge Barack Obama for the White House in November. Given how weak the Republican field is, the choice should be pretty clear.

Measuring a candidate is a difficult task, but as a voter you have a responsibility to make a judgement about which candidate will be best suited for the Presidency. There are several metrics you can use. The two metrics that seem to be getting the most attention are ideological alignment, and electability. This is especially true when discussing the candidacy of Mitt Romney.

Many of you may have heard of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). SOPA is a new bill that recently came out of the House Judiciary Committee. Its intent is obvious, to put a stop to online piracy. In particular SOPA “specifically targets foreign website primarily dedicated to illegal activity or foreign websites that market themselves as such”.

For some it’s abortion. For others, it’s taxes. For others still, it same-sex marriage. Here’s the thing- Everyone has an issue.

My issue? Women’s Rights.

I support this by participating in multiple forms of activism and…by not voting people into office that hate me.

I’ve heard a lot of talk about Newt Gingrich being “the smartest guy in the room” at every debate. To be fair, I have perpetuated the talk. Upon further reflection, however, I am of a mind to change my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, Newt is a smart guy, but I think the label is wrong. Newt is the wittiest guy on stage. He is enjoyable to watch. He is the class clown of the 2012 presidential class. Newt is the most popular guy around- he’s the big man on campus. It doesn’t matter what he does, he will be applauded for it. There-in lies the problem.

Italian Premier Mario Monti formed a government of bankers, diplomats and business executives Wednesday, saying the absence of politicians in his Cabinet will spare political parties the “embarrassment” of taking the tough decisions needed to steer the country from financial disaster.

Chuck Raasch put into words what all the pundits are thinking: Romney is the GOP’s back-up prom date. Okay, maybe, but why? In terms of electability, intelligence and ability no one disputes his credentials. He’s not exciting, but he is reliable. And he doesn’t make many mistakes, so he’s annoying to the press, who would like a good soundbite.

Each politician has an answer to our economic woes that attempts to lay out their own philosophy and set themselves apart from the crowd. President Obama is trying to create a program that will save his own job in 2012, while the Republican candidates are trying to contrast themselves with both their competitors and the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Some refuse to spend a penny more on government programs, others want to raise taxes to pay for their programs, still others abjectly refuse to raise anything that looks like a tax. All of this tinkering is well and good, but with the partisan divide in Washington and throughout the country, the country needs a vision of where it is going, not what they are wearing enroute. The details obviously must follow, but they mean nothing if leadership does not spell out the direction overall.

Here is what I would preach as a vision, with some simple fixes to get us going. The rest of the details can be handled after the initial steps and direction are laid out.

We are only going to have one post for all the PD family to express their feelings and memories today. Rather than have several individual posts from contributors, we are going to let everyone who wishes the chance to talk about the day that changed everything for Americans through comments on this thread.

Thank you.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the DNC Chairwoman, is heading the the GOP Debate in Tampa. It’s in an effort to paint the GOP as extreme for wanting Cut, Cap, and Balance, and for support of the Ryan Plan. No news there, however, she seems to have her target set on one GOP candidate in particular. According to Politico:

Democrats are trying to keep Mitt Romney from carving out space to Perry’s left — a mark, perhaps, of who they see as a tougher general election candidate.

She will lay in to Mitt Romney’s outright hypocrisy on the issue. Romney thinks he can get to the left of Rick Perry on Social Security – but Romney’s support for privatizing Social Security is as hostile and dangerous to the program as Perry’s rhetoric and attitude. Gambling Social Security in the stock market as Romney would do would devastate the program and we’re not going to let Mitt Romney get away with pretending he has any virtue at all on the issue,” the source said.

Well, while the Democratic party may be experts on hypocrisy, I think defining another person’s virtues might be best left up to someone else.

And this is why I believe Ron Paul will not win the Republican nomination or the Presidency. This is his answer to why we should not have a foreign presence in other countries. I’m not commenting on whether he is right or wrong, I am think that this is a good way to destroy his chances at the the Oval Office. I don’t see him garnering votes from military members or conservative but non-libertarians.

Regarding 9/11, Paul said that attacks against the U.S. from Middle Eastern groups at home and abroad can be traced to the foreign presence of U.S. troops, as well as America’s relationships with dictator regimes. Paul referred to a military base in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, as a key motivator in the Sept. 11th attacks.

A bad sign for Obama:

In a huge public blow to the electoral fortunes of both President Obama and the Democratic Party, the president of the AFL-CIO said Thursday that organized labor is preparing to ditch Democrats and go it alone in building up its own grassroots structure.

Specifically, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told reporters that the nation’s largest labor federation will scale back their involvement with the Democratic Party in advance of the 2012 elections.

So is this the start of a Labor Party or is this simply a ploy to force the Democratic Party to fall in line?

Fore!

I have heard a lot of conservative talk show hosts beating President Obama up for his most recent vacation. While I agree the timing wasn’t good, I also think this type of nit-picking is unfair. More than unfair, it’s silly. There is enough to be concerned about politically. So I am going to do something I rarely do- stick up for the President. I know, I know, it’s snowing in Los Angeles today. However, let us think about this rationally.

President Obama is, at this moment, the most powerful man in the free world, and probably on earth. It is by his decision that wars are declared. It is by is decisions that economies prosper or fail. (We can discuss those things separately.) Because he has the power to make such life altering decisions, and the responsibility, he also shoulders a great deal of stress. I know he signed up for the job, but that doesn’t alleviate the stress. Add to this that the man still has a wife and young children for which he is responsible. Its a tough place to be.

Okay, this ad may be good, but I just can’t get past the whole ‘Ron Paul as Superhero’ theme. The guy looks like he needs the podium to hold him up in the ad. Aside from that, it feels a little like he’s running for high school class president. I know that Paulites will have plenty to say, but you have to admit this looks like the wrong ad for the wrong guy.

I have been having nightmares. Nightmares about the debt ceiling debacle. Seriously. I’m not kidding. The pundits who keep saying that the American people are not tuned in to this debate are absolutely wrong. Heroes are emerging on each side of the aisle. Paul Ryan has for many months now been considered the lovable but slightly goofy republican mascot. This speech seals the deal, and probably moves him from mascot, to at the very least, sidekick. (Although, one could argue that full-on hero status will be forthcoming.)

On Monday President Obama told the nation that,

It’s time to “pull off the Band-Aid” and “eat our peas,” Obama told reporters of the need for both sides to make difficult choices to address the nation’s mounting federal deficits and debt. “Let’s step up. Let’s do it.”

Perhaps one of the reasons I love golf so much is because, through Boy Scouting, I became comfortable being alone out in the woods. I also learned some other things that apply to golf and, more importantly, life. Please review the Boy Scout Oath and the Law:

Scout Oath (or Promise)
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

Note from David: Welcome yet another newb, Robert Roodhouse!

Steven Spielberg, Michelle Pfeiffer, Terrance Howard, Dennis Quaid, Bradley Cooper, Kim Kardashian, Marlon Wayans, Rachel Ray, Seth Macfarlane, and whoever that guy is who hosts Survivor. What do they all have in common?

Apparently they are “White House Correspondents”, as they were all guests at this weekend’s White House Correspondents Dinner. Chuck Todd and company must be rolling in their… what? Those guys are alive?

And we got so mad at the Salahis.

Has the news industry become so convoluted and entwined with the entertainment industry that we can’t tell one from another? Maybe the White House can’t invite every political blogger through its gates, but bloggers have a firm shot at better news analysis than the cast of Iron Man 2. No bias here, naturally…
