Edit: I’ll be appearing on Al Jazeera English tonight between 11:00-11:30 pm EST to break down the South Carolina primary.

South Carolina is Newt Gingrich’s best chance at winning a primary. How will he approach poll-leader Mitt Romney? Gingrich used to be beloved as the “nice guy” who always brought the conversation back to beating Barack Obama. Now his surrogates have bested Romney’s negative attack ads with a series of brutal spots and a 28 minutes documentary-style hit job. All of this seems to have backfired, as Romney’s poll numbers have actually increased. This and Thursday’s debate will be very interesting to see the strategy employed by the Gingrich campaign. Meanwhile, with only five candidates left, Ron Paul will surely get enough time to make his points, even with also-ran Rick Perry hanging around.
