It’s the first poll that has shown Herman Cain taking a hit since his alleged sexual harassers came forward, but it comes with another surprise: Newt Gingrich.

The McClatchy-Marist poll has Mitt Romney first, followed by Newt and then Herman Cain.

Many expected Cain’s numbers to take a hit eventually, but I can’t imagine there are many that thought Newt Gingrich would be the one to surge into the role as the next possible “Anybody but Mitt” candidate. Granted this is one poll, so you can’t completely write off Cain, nor can we anoint Newt, but it shows that the Cain surge may finally be slowing.
