Despite the fact he was once one of the most powerful and popular Republican leaders in the nation, and one of the driving forces of 1994’s”Contract with America,” Newt Gingrich’s 2012 campaign appears to be in serious trouble after a series of defections by some his top campaign leaders.

The struggling start to Republican Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign worsened yesterday with the departures of his national co-chairman, campaign manager, longtime spokesman and aides in states that vote early in the nomination race.

The mass resignations were sparked by discord within the campaign over strategy, the role of the candidate’s wife, and money problems, aides and supporters said.

The campaign’s implosion heightens doubts about whether Gingrich will survive for much longer in the presidential contest.

Let’s face it – while Newt has name recognition and is smart as a whip, his marriage history and occasional eccentric stands that are counter to orthodox conservatives on issues (see Medicare) made him one of the more flawed candidates in a Republican field that is currently about as pretty as the Delta House after a toga party.

Despite his campaign staff being the recipient of Pai Mei’s Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique, a stubborn (or daft?) Gingrich promised to soldier on:

“I am committed to running the substantive, solutions- oriented campaign I set out to run earlier this spring,” he said in a statement yesterday. “The campaign begins anew Sunday in Los Angeles.”
