Political insiders have ranked Mitt Romney as the favorite to win the Republican nomination in 2012, while Romney’s likely co-favorite, Sarah Palin, finished fifth behind John Thune, Tim Pawlenty and the surprising second place winner, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. These rankings were published in a story on the National Journal’s website.

While Romney’s win seems par for the course, Daniel’s rise to second and Palin’s flop to fifth are both a snap hook into the woods. Daniels, a certified platinum fiscal conservative, drew some ire from the right due to a proposed “truce” on social issues, ostensibly so more time and energy could be used to fix economic issues.

What is your take on the insider’s take on a race that really hasn’t gotten off the ground yet?
