Punishment

On my way to work this morning I heard a report of The One calling upon Latinos to “punish our enemies”. I found myself thinking that The One is getting very well acquainted with punishment – so much so that he’s beginning to look and act like an option quarterback playing in the second half of a very tough football game.

For those of you unfamiliar with the comparison, you need to understand a little bit about the triple option offensive scheme once popular among high school and college football teams. It is primarily a running offense which has three (or more) “options” to march the ball down the field. The Quarterback can hand the ball off to the Fullback, keep the ball and run himself, or pitch the ball to a Tailback. This is all fine and good in theory, but the offensive scheme can be very tough on the Quarterback because instead of being a passer (with all the protections that entails) he becomes just another running back.

Any decent defensive coach will, upon learning he’s up against an option offense, deliver the following charge to his defensive lineman: The Quarterback hits the ground on every play – no exceptions. Most Quarterbacks don’t like the option offense because it puts a target on them – and they get punished on every play. Hit a Quarterback often enough, and hard enough, and round about the middle of the third quarter he starts making bad decisions, second guessing his actions, and often hesitating because he knows no matter what happens, the 320 pound defensive end is going to plant him in the turf.

Enter Barack Obama and the Democrats. In the 2006 midterms they won big – breaking the Republican hold on the legislative branch. In 2008, their star Quarterback Obama handed the Republicans their collective hindquarters. They tore down the goal posts, burned the stadium to the ground, and made off with the entire corps of cheerleaders. Life, for them at least, was as good as it gets.

Thankfully, on the political field anyway, there are always rematches. The 2010 cycle has not been nearly as nice to Team Obama as the previous two series. QB Obama was in the midst of turning the corner and high-stepping his way through Massachusetts when Scott Brown came out of nowhere and clothes-lined him. He attempted an end-run in New Jersey only to have Chris Christie square up on the end and pile drive him into the turf yet again. Virginia’s Bob McDonnell didn’t buy the trick double reverse and cut The One off at the knees deep in his own backfield.

Since then, The One has had some successes. He’s run some trick plays, scored a few points, and done his best to make the crowd think he’s still got the 2008 mojo. The crowd, however, isn’t buying it. Time and time again, The One emerges from the dog pile looking out of his ear-hole and the constant pummeling is beginning to take its toll. He’s running around the country telling Latinos to punish his opponents and taunting Republicans by telling them to “come for the ride, but they gotta sit in the back.”
One week from today, the final play will run as the electorate is given its chance to weigh in on the current trajectory of this great nation. QB Obama will take the snap deep in his own territory on fourth down and 17 miles. He’ll take a deep drop and scan the field for an open deep receiver. What he won’t see is the fact that his offensive line has crumbled. The voters, personified by a defensive lineman, will have an open shot on an unprotected Quarterback with his back turned.

There are several thoughts that go through the mind of the defensive lineman at times like these. He focuses on the quarterback, willing him to stay put for just a few more seconds. Just before contact, he decides how hard to hit this quarterback. NFL Hall of Fame Defensive Lineman Howie Long used to say that he didn’t usually punish quarterbacks too much if they didn’t put up too much of a fight. Some people think such a sack shouldn’t be made personal.

Well, dear reader, I remind you as a voter of what The One and his minions have wrought upon this nation. I remind you that The One, The Pelosi, and Dusty Harry have attempted to implement policies and laws that, if left unchecked, will bankrupt this nation in very short order. Next Tuesday is not time to be nice or indulge yourself in all too costly demonstrations of bipartisanship. After their victory in 2008, Team Obama threw a party with an open bar paid for by the American Taxpayer. We’ll be paying for the cleanup of their mess for many years to come.

This election is all about punishment. Hit them as hard as you possibly can. Drive them so far deep in the turf they’ll be hesitant to get up again. Take a page from Conan and have the “best in life” next Wednesday.

This is a harbinger of things to come.
