UPDATE: The 2016 Games go to Rio.

In a true stunner, Chicago was eliminated in the first round of Olympic bid city voting. Has Obama lost some luster in the international community?

I enjoyed how he said that there were audible gasps. Sounded more like cheers to me.

    Sweet Schadenfreude.

This shows how much respect the world has for The Apologist. The WGN reporters were so in the tank for Obama. New York didn’t get it because the world hated Bush so Chicago should because of how much love they have for Obama. I threw up a little in my mouth when I heard that.

I suppose nobody gave a big piddly putz about the flotus sitting on papas knee watching Olga perform. What the h_ _ _ did that have to do with why the games should come to the US anyway?

Just think of the carbon footprint… flying POTUS, AF1 plus decoy, the C17 cargo planes, security escort craft, etc. across the Atlantic and back.

I bet the IOC is racist. That’s the only possibility. Does Jimmy Carter have something to say about that?

I wonder if the Obamas will waste more tax money (fuel, etc) and take separate flights back to the states. I’m so glad they are using the precious little funds we have so wisely!

I too am pulling for Rio. (Been to Sao Paulo on a layover, it’s beautiful there.)

Well, if you paint America as evil and oppressive, and needing to be sent down a notch or two, why would anyone want to listen to you then promote it as the place to be? Really, you can’t have it both ways.

I wonder how many Czech and Polish delegates were in the IOC panel.

This is outstanding. You would think it is Rush’s birthday.

  • Charles

There’s a very simple explanation for this…all of Copenhagen in general and the Olympic committee in particular are racist…Can’t wait for that spin to commence..

I LOVE the headline on Drudge… “The ego has landed.”

    • Whodat

I am with you, Alaina! Great headline.

Let us hope that this is the first of many defeats for this team.

During the campaign season Obama and Axelrod were lauded as brilliant politicians. But time and time again they make the most bizarre political calculations now that they live in the Big House.

In the grand scheme, Alaina is right, it’s not a big deal. But he could have scored more points by staying home and saying, “I’d love the Olympics in Chicago, but there’s just too much going on right now to justify the time and tens of millions of dollars in expense for me and my enormous entourage to travel abroad. I wish the Chicago Bid Committee the best of luck and know they have worked hard to make this a reality.”

I, no Obama fan, would have respected and lauded that answer.

Its gonna be a long flight home from Copenhagen.

    Personally, I’m pulling for Rio.

I’m pulling for Rio, too. I lived in Brazil for two years and would love to return for the games.

Third for Rio! I lived in Sao Paulo for 7 years, and have friends in Brasil. I was so dissapointed when they lost the last bid.

Between the World Cup in 2014 and this in 2016, it’s looking like Brazil’s coming out party to the world as a major player: growing econ, major world events. They have excellent sports teams (beyond soccer), so it’s a great op for them.

Beleza! Which sport are you competing in? ;)

  • Eric

    Aww, that’s too bad.
I hope the One doesn’t take it personally. It’s just that the world didn’t want to see the Olympic rings made out of the Obama O.

Wow! Last night on the s-news they were going on and on, about how when ever a country’s president or PM showed up to pitch for “their” city, they got it. Guess not this time….I’m kinda glad though that someone else will be getting it.

  • Alaina Segovia

I think this just shows how little influence he actually had.

In the grand scheme of things, it shouldn’t be a big deal. However, in the wake of hearing that he’s only talked to his General in Afghanistan and made the Olympic bid a priority, this was the worst case scenario for him (and Michelle and Oprah).
