She’ll also be able to travel ABROAD more freely, also, which will allow her to build up some foreign affairs credentials.

(And by foreign affairs, I don’t mean the “Sanford” variety!)

Good move for her. Hopefully, Alaska will choose a good replacement.

Not included in the article is the rumor that she has hired on David Kaiser as a close personal aide to help navigate her image with Republican moderates.

      Lies. All lies!

    Nice, RSE!

This is a stunner in every sense of the word. Not just deciding against reelection in 2010, but resigning completely the office in just three weeks.

My Sanford Instincts tell me there is more to this than wanting to be prepped for 2012.

I think her chances of winning the nomination, should she still decide to make a run, just took an Alaskan size hit.

    1. Neil Braithwaite on 03.07.2009 at 17:29 (Reply)

      Alaskan “SUPER” size hit!

“Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual.”

I don’t know what the “real” reason is – and I don’t really care, but the Republican Party has no room, “in this particular climate” for quitters!

    2. Red State Eddio on 03.07.2009 at 17:30 (Reply)

When I first read an update, I thought it was simply she was not seeking re-election, which would make sense. But to just up and quit (how much more time did she have?) seems a tad bit excessive, unless there is a whole lot more underneath, a la Sanford.

I have no idea what her political aspirations truely are but I do think that if she uses the next two years wisely she may be doing her Presidential aspirations, if she has any, some good.

I expect we will get some serious and diverse perspectives on how this move will impact her morning line odds in the horserace. Good luck handicapping this one, Jason.

    WOW!

I really didn’t see Palin as a candidate for 2012. I think she was brought out too soon and it hurt her.

The only thing I can think of is she wants a run at Lisa Murkowski’s Senate seat.

    1. RickyD on 03.07.2009 at 17:53 (Reply)

I think there’s a good shot Troy just hit the mother load. My gut tells me she’s prepping for a Senate run, NOT a 2012 White House run.

I’ve listen to her speach and I’ve read it too. With her 7th grader vocabulary she has no chance for either one…

      1. Gary Russell on 03.07.2009 at 18:23 (Reply)

        Uh…

I hate to point this out, “Independent”…

        Just have to, though…

        If you’re going to criticize someone’s “7th grade vocabulary”…

Maybe you should check your subject/verb agreement?

        “I’ve listen…”??

        Classic!

        1. Independent on 03.07.2009 at 18:31 (Reply)

English is my second language and I’m not running for either Senate or President (Gary I know President has to be born in US…)

          1. Gary Russell on 03.07.2009 at 18:41 (Reply) (Comments won't nest below this level)

Have you heard Kennedy or Byrd speak? The bar is set pretty low on Senate speech…

            Also…
I appreciate your 2nd language skills – I’m monolingual myself.

            But…
If you’re English skills aren’t advanced, how can you critique someone elses as you did?

            Just curious… :)

          2. Independent on 03.07.2009 at 19:34 (Reply)

Curious Gary – I don’t see anything wrong with critique of someone’s verbal skills, I just wish politicians will be more coherent.
By the way – I’m working to adance my skills. Thanks for your advice (smiley face)…

Most of my fellow PDers (except Troy & RickyD) seem to be assuming the worst, so I’m going to go out on a limb here.

I do not at all think that her family is experiencing a “Sanford” problem.

A Senate run is possible, but why would she need to leave office for that?

I’m thinking that she is taking a private sector position that will put her in a position to spend more time with her family, stop gettting frivilous lawsuits by libs, increase the family cash flow, all while still leaving her options open for a 2012 pres run.

    You betcha! Who’s with me?

  7. Dave on 03.07.2009 at 18:22 (Reply)

IF even Sanford couldnt get me out of politicalderby exile, would this????

    Definitely it would.

THis for sure ends any political aspirations she will ever have. no way she could run for anything now.

I think she was just sick of all the hassle, all the attacks, all the sick ethics complaints.

If you are catching flack, you are over the target. Well, Huck was right on that, but some Political Planes can’t handle the flack and either turn back, or explode spectacularly.

Will she show up on a Fox News nightly line up?

Really need to update the horse race Jason.

  9. Rick Hendrix on 03.07.2009 at 20:32 (Reply)

I think the jury’s out on whether this will help or hurt any 2012 aspirations. It depends on what she does with it. As of right now, I’d say it doesn’t help … but we’ll see.

  10. Alaina on 03.07.2009 at 20:43 (Reply)

Wow… I spend an afternoon with my parents and this is what I come back to?

Well, at least we have something else to talk about other than Sanford and Michael Jackson….

  11. JE on 03.07.2009 at 22:22 (Reply)

Maybe she is just setting an example for Sanford to follow. Seriously, I think she Is just sick of being a lib target & has too many other options that hopefully will help get her kids out of lettermans monologue and keep her kid with downs out of the tabloids. Too many sick people with microphones in Amerika today.

  12. Brian H on 04.07.2009 at 00:16 (Reply)

If someone would have told any of us that a Republican governor was going to announce their resignation today……..

This is why I love the game of politics.

  13. mcon on 04.07.2009 at 01:10 (Reply)

Yeah better get to updating the horses. Say hello to the new clear front runner 3 years out. President Romney will be happy to take your questions.

  14. Chris on 05.07.2009 at 19:00 (Reply)

This is just bizarre, two of the front runners just self imploded, at least that is the assumption

As a liberal I think the person I most fear in the White House, other than Jeb Bush would be Newt Gingrich, does this help him and does he have a serious shot at the nomimation?

I think baring a disaster, Predident Obama will easily win reelection in 2012, so we might see another Bob Dole situation where none of the big guns would want to take the incumbant on

    1. Alaina on 05.07.2009 at 23:47 (Reply)

      Barring a disaster?

Have you turned on the news lately? Biden just said they “underestimated” our economic situation.
