With all due respect to Lt. Dan, one of the finest and most underrated actors of this generation, it would be a huge mistake for the GOP to embrace him (or someone like him) as a presidential racehorse. Congressman, Senator, even Governor of California is one thing, but wouldn’t conservatives lose credibility in their ongoing “experience” argument by rallying around a guy best known for working on a shrimp boat? I’m just sayin’.

Actor Gary Sinise floated as possible GOP savior

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Nicolle Wallace, a top adviser to George W. Bush and John McCain’s presidential campaign, is adding a few names to the list of Republicans who might lead the GOP out of the wilderness.

Top among them? Actor Gary Sinise.

Wallace, writing on The Daily Beast, said she first heard the idea from a fellow Republican.

“The natural strengths that an actor brings to politics would come in handy to anyone going up against Obama in 2012,” she wrote. “We will need an effective communicator who can stand toe to toe with Obama’s eloquence.”

The answer is, yes. The GOP would lose credibility.

Running for President is not something you just do. There is a skill set that one must have, and work on and fine tune to make that move. You wouldn’t enter a horse in the Kentucky Derby who has never ran a race.

So, is Gary Sinise the fresh face speaking common sense that Whodat is looking for?

  • Troy La Mana

Well, since I am out of a job I can run.

  • David Kaiser

And a special guest tonight, playing the role of David Kaiser, Mister Jason Wright!

Let’s give him a big hand!

Thank you, thank you very much. Here all week.

Don’t forget to try the meatloaf.

Sinise brings with him hundreds of thousands of votes from the troops he is so loyal to.
I’d vote for him a heartbeat.
    Nice on the eyes, too.
    And let’s face it.
Presidents don’t make decisions on their own. They have advisors.
Very little free thinking these days in the office.
    GO GARY!!

    • http://www.politicalderby.com/ Jason Wright, Editor

Yikes. So I guess you were one of the folks who thought Obama had enough experience then, right? You never made an argument that he wasn’t ready?

  • Terrance

I’d vote for Gary Sinise. And after four years of Obama, there’s a lot of naysayers that will be singing a whole new tune.
Maybe even, “I get my back into my living…”

    • http://www.politicalderby.com/ Jason Wright, Editor

      Heaven help us.

  • Amanda

Jason, you are so very uninformed.
First, it’s NOT Captain Dan. It’s Lt. Dan.
Second, if a country can elect a person like Obama, then surely it can elect a Gary Sinise.
By the time 2012 rolls around, we’re all going to be looking for a new Savior.
And by then, your Capt Dan might be looking a whole lot better after a few years of Obama.

    • http://www.politicalderby.com/ Jason Wright, Editor

Amanda, if you’re more concerned about Captain Dan vs. Lt. Dan than the prospect of Gary at the top of the GOP ticket, you might have some priority issues.

And I’m not an Obamite, trust me, but you can’t say that because we elected Obama we can elect Sinise. Obama had at least been on a ballot before. There’s no chance we’re electing someone whose first campaign–ever–is for the White House.

      • Gary Russell

        Hey!
What’s wrong with a “Gary” at the top of the ticket???

        • David Kaiser, Editor

So many comments, so little time…

          I heart you Gary :)

          • Gary Russell

            Right back atcha, big guy!

But, hey, just think of all of the great “Gary”s in the history of the world…
            Theres…
            um…
            well…
            and…
            the snail on Spongebob Squarepants…
            and…
            nevermind.

            • Red State Eddio

              What about Gary, Indiana?

Or the movie Glen-Gary Glen Ross?

              Or Gary Busey?

Uh, maybe I see what you mean…

  • kristen

I’m just glad an actor has his head on straight.

As much as I like Gary Sinice (great actor and overall genuine person), I don’t think throwing his hat in the ring is the right idea. Maybe he should get some executive experience under his belt first. But then again, this country elected Mr. No Experience; anything is possible.

  • East of Eden

Why is the GOP enlisting a Hollywood person to spread the message, or save the party? It seems like if they had merits to stand on, those should be used. Then again, what are principles for these days?

    • David Kaiser

Because EoE, if you haven’t noticed, not too many people are listening to the GOP message, let alone voting for it.

If a little glitz helps, why not let it happen?

      • East of Eden

I guess because I fear a GOP version of Barak Obama….all glitz and no substance. I get that the GOP needs to spruce up their delivery…I so get that, but I just don’t think they should be turning to Hollywood to do it. Ok…so I will admit, I would go for Chuck Norris.

  • http://762justice.com E L Frederick

    It’s Lt. Dan, not captain.

Gary Sinice is a great person. He has gone over to Iraq and Afghanistan on numberous occasions. I had the pleasure of meeting him and having my photo taken with him when he visited Iraq last year.

    • http://www.politicalderby.com/ Jason Wright, Editor

I’m sure he’s a wonderful person, and I respect that he’s a conservative in the cesspool of liberalism/socialism. But a presidential candidate? Really? Come on.

  • JE

OK, so the plan now is newt gingrich’s brain in bobby jindals body with gary sinise’s personality and forget reaganism. Clearly, the republicans are on the path to victory! (please note sarcasm)

  • Red State Eddio

“And now accepting the 2012 ‘Fred Thompson Impact Equivalency Award’…”

    • David Kaiser, Editor

      Bahahahaha.

I literally laughed out loud when I read that. Nice one RSE!

      • Red State Eddio

Cha-ching! Right back at ya, baby!

I chuckled as I wrote it out also…and I like Gary Sinise.

  • Amy

    Nice one, Doc!

    • David Kaiser, Editor

      Blam-o! Two points for Amy!

“Ronald Reagan? The actor? Then who’s VICE-President? Jerry Lewis? I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady! And Jack Benny is Secretary of the Treasury.”
