President Obama fulfilled a campaign promise and sent drones into Pakistan to kill militants. I guess he figures he can’t catch them and throw them into Gitmo anymore, so he better kill them outright!

Missiles fired from a suspected U.S. spy plane killed seven people Friday on the Pakistan side of the Afghan border, a lawless region where al-Qaida militants are known to hide out, officials said. The strike was the first on Pakistani territory since the inauguration of President Barrack Obama. Pakistani leaders had expressed hope Obama would halt the attacks, more than 30 of which have been launched since the middle of last year, reportedly killing several senior militants. The pro-U.S. government routinely protests them as a violation of the country’s sovereignty, but most observers speculate it has an unwritten agreement allowing them to take place.

Update: Although President Obama has not conceded that the attacks occurred, the death toll has now risen to 18! 21!

Update: UH-OH!

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – President Hamid Karzai condemned a U.S. operation he said killed 16 Afghan civilians, while hundreds of villagers denounced the American military during an angry demonstration Sunday. Karzai said the killing of innocent Afghans during U.S. military operations “is strengthening the terrorists.”

Talk about a disingenuous post. Maybe you should change your display name to “Sean Hannity.” This has been going on for awhile now.

    1. Cordeiro on 23.01.2009 at 15:53 (Reply)

I’m sure our new President dialed the attacks down a notch – perhaps from “extra-crispy” to “regular”. Don’t say I never write anything good about Obama.

Obama has said many times that he would attack militants in Pakistan. I’m not complaining – I just am suprised that he fulfilled his promise so quickly! As for Hannity – How about a Hate Political Derby hotline?

Political Derby has a few guys who aren’t militant neo-cons. You just happen to be one of the obnoxious ones. Keep making yourself look like a fool though.

Whoa Robert! Tone it down a bit. Its alright to attack ideas and opinions, but not the people behind them. That’s not how we operate here.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and there is plenty of room for dissent. I welcome your input, but Stephen is neither obnoxious nor a fool. We all can agree or disagree without tearing each other down.

        1. Tobias on 23.01.2009 at 19:07 (Reply)

this is a pretty absurd statement, in all honesty. People, instead of their ideas, are regularly attacked here, whether they be posters or the political figures being discussed.

The title of this post is so disingenuous and flagrantly incorrect, it is certainly EITHER foolish or obnoxious. And it certainly isn’t meant to attack President Obama’s ideas, but to sow false information about an ongoing policy.

          1. Robert Preston on 24.01.2009 at 01:16 (Reply) (Comments won't nest below this level)

Exactly. If you don’t want to be attacked as an individual then don’t make posts that are meant to incite that kind of response.

          2. J on 24.01.2009 at 16:33 (Reply) (Comments won't nest below this level)

Very nicely put. A blatantly incorrect headline. Even gets wrong Obama’s promise.

  3. Stephen Fountain on 23.01.2009 at 19:12 (Reply)

Man! You liberals are rough! Why do your your complaints always descend into personal attacks? Can’t we just stick to the issues? It’s a good thing I’ve got a loving family to help me nurse these wounds! ;)

Personally, Stephen, I’m offended. I thought I had the corner on “obnoxious militant neo-con” market here at PD.

Dang, I thought I was the obnoxious militant neo-con.

Stephen, it’s a good thing I’m a conservative. Way to play the “if you’re not with us you’re against us” card though. You neo-cons are good at that game.

        Robert,

How long has this split personality thing been going on?

A “conservative” who hates conservatives…you must be a psychiatrist’s dream!

        1. Robert Preston on 24.01.2009 at 15:30 (Reply)

I don’t hate conservatives – I hate the phony conservatives who have taken over the Republican party and spew nothing but hateful rhetoric instead of trying to improve the party.

        2. J on 24.01.2009 at 16:36 (Reply)

There is not one concise philosophy in being a conservative. Thinking so would completely eliminate the moderate wing of the party.

          1. Stephen Fountain, Editor on 24.01.2009 at 17:03 (Reply) (Comments won't nest below this level)

            J,

There is not one concise philosophy in being a conservative? C’mon? I think you have the word moderate confused with conservatism. Moderates have no definitive beliefs. Conservatism stands pretty firm – small government, strong defense, low taxes, right to life.

          2. J on 25.01.2009 at 00:02 (Reply)

“Conservatism stands pretty firm – small government, strong defense, low taxes, right to life.”
As I have said, many in the Republican Party fails to understand that there is a moderate wing in the party, and that it is vital to their success in the house. The moderate wing has long tradition from Nelson Rockefeller to Thomas Dewey all the way to senators like Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Now you may not like to admit they’re moderate, but two moderate Republicans are better than any democrats. The Republican Party in the House is practically extinct in New England due to their lack of support of moderates.
There is a moderate wing to the Republican party, even if you don’t want to acknowledge it.

          3. Stephen Fountain, Editor on 25.01.2009 at 09:29 (Reply)

Now, there are some names to rally the party – Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. I can almost see the victory line!

          4. J on 25.01.2009 at 12:15 (Reply)

They might not rally the party, but like I said, they can win in in Maine because of their moderate stances. If you don’t want any House members in New England, then stick with your strategy. Without moderates, you’d be surprised how much smaller your party would be.

          5. Stephen Fountain, Editor on 25.01.2009 at 15:13 (Reply)

I’m not opposed to moderates in the party – some of my best friends are moderates. But from my perspective, it is because of moderates and because of wanting to take a moderate position that we have done such things as expanding Medicare, proposing amnesty, and not pursuing strong border security. All of which have been in contrast to conservative positions.

          6. J on 26.01.2009 at 02:46 (Reply)

Just because someone is pro-choice does not mean they can’t be conservative, right? So their is no such thing as pro-choice conservative. I’m sure you will find many prominent conservatives that disagree with your simplified notion of conservatism. And also, as I have said before, one of original key elements to conservatism was non interventionist military action. Recall the position that Barry Goldwater, Mr. Conservative, holds on abortion: Abortion is “not a conservative issue at all”.

Alaina, there is a difference, but I am making a larger point about how the Republican Party needs moderates.

          7. Alaina Segovia on 25.01.2009 at 15:20 (Reply)

There’s a difference between being a Conservative and being a Republican.

I’ll take the “Constitutional Conservative That Told You So” title

If he’s going to close Gitmo, he better figure something out. Continuing Bush’s attacks is probably his best option since those guys are going back to Al Qaeda… even after rehab for jihadists.

      C’mon, Alaina. Don’t be rediculous.

Bush is back in Texas, with us. Dead Americans is not as important as world opinion. Have you not learned that by now?
