GOP Convention back on?

Posted on September 1st, 2008 at 10:42 am by Dave

According to breaking news at RedState, the convention may be back on.

“The GOP Convention may very well get back on. Rumors are floating around the XCEL Center that the convention may be geared back up a few notches after Gustav came in weaker than expected.

Here, though, is what some of the behind the scenes people are bristling about: The McCain Campaign has ordered all punches against the Obama campaign taken out of speeches for the entire convention duration.”

After wondering about this last night, I was interested what would be the result if the GOP had to cancel the convention,  how would that have gone? What will be the result in terms of impact, and/or post  convention bounce of the Republican Convention?

I think McCain is doing the right thing here. My only concern is that by doing the right thing he may be hurting his chances at cutting down the post convention bump of the DNC and limiting any sort of bounce you would expect from the RNC. Looks like, for now, that the damages are going to be minimal.. even for New Orleans.

I agree you Troy. Lets hope that McCain putting his “Country First” does not go unnoticed.

    Great first post Dave.

I think if handled correctly, even if they had to cancel the main festivities, there could be a bounce.

They need to have the right attitude about everything. Watching earlier, it seemed they lacked the genuine reverence for the situation (it looked thrown together at the last minute, which makes it look like you don’t care).

Having said that, the expectations for this convention are low right now. It lacks the buzz that the Dem Convention had, but they have a real opportunity to hit this one out of the park. This is what I would do…

Tomorrow night I would focus on the victims of the Hurricane rather than the effort being done to help. I would have numerous prayers (be sure to start and end each night with a prayer), and maybe even have an entire night of prayer on behalf of the people who have been affected by these storms (people who are/will be temporarily displaced, people who’s houses have been/will be destroyed, people have been/will be injured by the storm, and ask God to be with the people who are doing the rescue efforts). Talk briefly about the things John McCain has been through, what he’s done to help people, and what Republicans want to do to help people (make sure and mention specifics that McCain will do if elected).

Wednesday night talk about Sarah Palin and her values. Have Palin talk about and give a rebuttal to all the major knocks against her including her lack of experience, trooper-gate, and Bristol’s moment of weakness (talk about how she felt about her daughter’s pregnancy and have her reiterate her love for her daughter and her unborn grandchild). All we’ve heard so far is speculation and hearsay, but the American people would love to hear her explain her side of things in her own voice. End the night (and her speech) talking about how she’s reformed Alaska and stood up to corruption, and how that’s what she wants to do in Washington.

Thursday night talk about McCain’s life of service and how he’s always done what he thought was right, regardless of the consequences. Talk about how his family has a tradition of service, and how he would truly serve the American people if elected. Explain that he’s has been and is willing to work on a bipartisan level in order to help the American people. In his speech, have him talk a little about his family (both growing up and now), talk about his service to his country and what the value of that is to him, talk about how he wants to reform Washington (including cutting spending, fighting corruption, and balancing the budget). End with him reiterating his promise of service to the American people and have him challenge them to join him in (both by electing him and otherwise).

Just to clarify… I would have Romney pray tomorrow representing the Mormons, have Sam Brownback pray representing the Catholics, Huckabee pray representing the Baptists, Eric Cantor pray representing Jews, if we have any other faiths in our party, I’d get them up there too. And of course you can have others pray too, but everyone should be represented by at least one person from their faith. You might even have a time where there is an open mic for anyone that wanted to pray, but that might be too risky.

Ooops, I’m full of omissions tonight. *Huckabee representing the Protestants…not just Baptists.*

I left my own faith group out, haha. Though technically I’m just a Christian, I don’t do labels.

Thanks ANdDru1, I agree with the prayer part. What about allahpundit (Atheist) at HotAir? :-p
