Various sources have indicated that former Presidential candidate Joe Biden will be announced as Barack Obama’s running mate for the 2008 election.

The long awaited text message has yet to be sent, so of course this is not quite a done deal, but it looks like the man who once called Obama a fresh face will be his number two on the trail this fall.

Let the games begin!

With the snub of Hitlery it now puts an edge on McCain to look harder at picking a woman. He is going to pull 6 million votes because of it already but can pull in up to another 6 million if he chooses a woman. It might be just the edge McCain needs to seal a win in November.

Obama and Biden have a chemistry throughout the campaign which was evident at each debate. This is true even though Biden made that initial Obama isn’t ready to be President comment, along with a couple other similar ones.

Biden also was the one, along with GOPer Dick Lugar, who got Obama onto the Senate Foreign Affairs committee, which isn’t usually done with a freshman Senator.

There chemistry was pretty evident to me watching them on TV a bit earlier.

THe tough thing for McCain if he picks Romney, is that chemistry just isn’t there. They’ve patched things up a bit–but you just know that Romney isn’t Johnny Macs kind of man. It’s just evident.

Now, he can still choose Romney as his VP based on that–and in fact my selection in Jason’s poll is that he will (although I must say I wasn’t 100% in making it)–but knowing McCain, he is still thinking hard on it.

Now seeing the good fellowship between Obama and Biden, I think Mac is thinking he would like the same–which means Tom Ridge or Jo the Libster. I think Ridge is the choice from the heart of the two; with an invitation to Lieberman to be sec of state or defense perhaps.

But that big tug for Johhny Mac is Ridge’s pro-choice position; even though Ridge would bite the bullet on it as McCain’s VP. He is a good soldier.

THe other push for Mccain is wanting to be the “real” maverick McCain–and choose his own damn VP. McCain has never made abortion an issue. He doesn’t care what Ridge’s position is on it–all your folks on the far right know that is true.

So, the push and pull I bet is hitting McCain right now…All the pros telling his to go for Romney; his heart saying Ridge.

I just know that if McCain picks Romney–which probably is his best pick for a number of reasons–his distain for the man is going to come out somewhere along the way in the campaign. I also bet team McCain will have Romney campaigning on his own nearly all of the time if he is picked as well.

The Mormon issue also will matter. Just like there is 5 -to- 10% of Americans who I believe won’t vote for Obama merely because of his skin color, I think the same percentage won’t vote for McCain if Romney is one the ticket do to his religion. This is especially true of Catholics. THe Latter Day Saints have a long history of institutionally not approving of the Catholic faith–even though I believe its not an issue to Romney. Many Catholics are aware of this tension though–and will not vote for MCCain if Romney is on the ticket.

But he still is a net positive for McCain I believe—politically. Personally, I think it’s not a net positive for Johhny Mac.

You know, Americans will forgive verbal gaffes if it comes from someone who says them with conviction.

Reagan was known for saying some really off-the-wall things:

“Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do.” — Ronald Reagan, 1981

“Facts are stupid things.” — Ronald Reagan, 1988, a misquote of John Adams, “Facts are stubborn things.”

“Fascism was really the basis for the New Deal.” Ronald Reagan, 1976, on his failed campaign for the Republican nomination.

“The best minds are not in government.” — Ronald Reagan.

“You can’t help those who simply will not be helped. One problem that we’ve had, even in the best of times, is people who are sleeping on the grates, the homeless who are homeless, you might say, by choice.” — President Reagan, 1/31/84

    Some classics :)

I don’t see how those last two or three are “gaffes”…

“The best minds are not in government.”
      – No argument here!

“…who are homeless, you might say, by choice.”
      – He didn’t say that ALL homeless chose it. You can’t deny that many chose it (due to mental illness, or laziness, or…)

“Fascism was really the basis for the New Deal.”
      – Maybe not facism, but not exactly free-market capitalism, either. Open to debate – not a gaffe!

        *eyeroll*

They have drugs that can help with that, now!

          • David Kaiser

That may be so, but nothing will cure you…

            • Gary Russell

Alrighty, then, Kaiser, cure me with your infinite wisdom!

Start with my first “eyeroll”-inducing comment:

Tell me why you find it inconceivable that one might argue that the “best minds” are not in government? I’m not saying that there aren’t some there…I’m just wondering why you would call it a “gaffe” that one could opine that the best minds might gravitate towards the private sector???

After you have schooled me in that one, then you can move on (.org??) to the homeless statement.
Can you honestly argue that there are NOT many, many homeless who are there by choice (i.e., refusal to accept help from a shelter because they “don’t like the rules”)?

Don’t roll your eyes at me, young man! (at least not without giving an intelligent defense of your questionable – at best – comments).

And McCain immediately runs an ad using Biden’s words against Obama.

Does that suggest he will not be naming Romney?

  • Whodat in Texas

Good point. Man, I didn’t see that coming…

  • Whodat in Texas

Rush is the big winner here
‘Cause for three hours a day
    Biden’s goofs and gaffs will
Be on air and fully “in play”!

Plus, should mean hours of fun
    For non-paid pundits like us;
Not to mention Hillary’s PMS gang
At the convention and that fuss!!!

    Whodat is mildly euphoric

I guess that means Delaware’s no longer a battleground state. ;-)

    Yeah! I win!

Of course it was going to be Biden. There was no other candidate with foreign policy experience. Obama had to have Biden.

Now, the Republicans can bring up a “co-presidency” and will Biden really be acting as President ala Cheney?

At least McCain can seek Romney’s counsel but Romney won’t be in the driver’s seat. If Obama wins we may as well just refer to President Biden. Obama will only be there for show.

  • AndDru1

That’s a good choice, good thing they didn’t wait till tomorrow (err…today). I actually kind of like Biden.
