I’m sure by now most of you have seen the T. Boon Pickens’ commercial talking about his new plan for reducing oil consumption in this country by 20% using mainly wind and solar power. He starts off by informing you that America sends roughly $700 Billion to foreign countries to pay for her imported oil. He claims this will be the largest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind. From a purely historical standpoint, I would argue that the transfer of gold and silver from the Americas to Europe in the days of the Conquistadores dwarfs that of today’s oil money, but that might be splitting hairs.

Either way, $700 Billion is a hell of a lot of cash. It’s roughly one-third of the budget of the United States Government. Simply put, its not an amount of money most anybody can imagine.

I don’t really have an opinion on the Pickens Plan. If he wants to spearhead a movement that puts up windmills and plants solar panels in the desert I wish him success. What I want to talk about is the sheer volume of cold hard earned American cash sent overseas to pay for something America has in abundance but is barred from accessing by an incredible shrinking minority of hard left politicians.

Let’s explore a little bit about what the recipients of America’s hard earned cash are doing with their oil revenues:

First off there’s the Sunny Mountain Ski Dome in Dubai. Yes, you will be able to ski in the desert – literally. This is what happens when a few people get money they literally don’t know how to spend. I’m waiting to hear Algore’s outrage over this project’s effect on global warming but I’m not holding my breath.

Evidently the United Arab Emirates didn’t have enough beach front property so they decided to spend their oil money on some new islands.

Those are the more harmless projects funded by your money. Other recipients aren’t nearly as frivolous. Here’s one most of you should recognize:

Good old Mahmoud makes no secret of his disdain for the United States. But for Israel, the US would be number one on his hit list. He believes the last Imam can only be brought forth with violence and he seems more than willing to instigate that environment. His country is the number one supplier of arms and munitions directly responsible for the deaths of US servicemen and women in Iraq. Yes, America, we’re subsidizing him.

And of course there’s good old cousin Hugo Chavez south of the border in Venezuela. The nation unfortunate enough to have elected Chavez has a pretty bleak picture for most of its citizens. 37.9% of Venezuelans live below the poverty line. They live with 18.7% annual inflation. One would think Hugo would spend most of his country’s oil wealth helping those citizens he promised to lift from capitalistic oppression via his “revolution”.  Well, Hugo took $3 billion and went shopping at Ivan’s Arms Bazaar. He says he needs the arms to “stop the imperia [the United States], which threatens our democracy.” Delusion thy name is Hugo.

So, where exactly am I going with this? Glad you asked.

Think for just a minute what that $700 Billion could do if a good chunk of it were staying in the United States. Imagine how many jobs would be created – or saved – if Americans were driving American cars powered by oil extracted, refined, and supplied to market by Americans.

I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t see any ski resorts being built in Death Valley.
