Tim Russert dead

Posted on June 13th, 2008 at 2:44 pm by David Kaiser, Editor

Some very shocking and sad news from Washington, as “Meet the Press” moderator and Washington bureau chief for NBC News Tim Russert has died of an apparent heart attack at NBC’s studios in DC.

Russert was 58.

I was about to post something on this site today, but I can’t. It can wait. Tim Russert is a giant here in D.C. His enthusiasm for politics will forever loom over this town. There aren’t many words. My prayers go out to teh Russert Family.

He’s somewhere alongside his dad, Big Russ, this Father’s Day.

Uh, Big Russ is alive and well in Buffalo. Tim just moved him from his home to a facility.

Whoops… I totally misspoke. Still a terrible tragedy. D.C. was weird this Friday, the 13th: blackouts downtown and two fires in the subways. Even the White House was running on generator power for a moment.

And now Tim’s gone. Of all his colleagues, I’m certain Matthews is having a fit. He looked up to Tim like an older brother (although Tim was three years younger). and Chris related with him because of the Irish-blue-collar background. This is such a shock…

Just saw Russert on MSNBC two nights ago; same smile, energy level, enthusiasm for the game…shows one how fickle–and sudden–life and death can be.

He was an equal opportunity media grill master; still remember the grilling he gave Hillary Clinton when he moderated the NY Senate debate between her and Lazio. Heard Bill Clinton called him after to complain.

He also is the only journalist really to date who’s put Dick “The hunter” Cheney on the hot seat and got him a bit flustered over his Iraq “cake walk” fantasies expressed as statements.

Of course Russert could toss a perfect softball as well–but who would ever think ill for him over doing so.

Imagine replacing him on Meet The Press? My guess is maybe Brokaw will do it for a while; then some substitute hosts.

    RIP Russert.

Timmy will be missed. David Gregory, you’re up…
