Because it’s a horserace…

Say what? A McCain landslide?!?

Posted on May 28th, 2008 at 8:43 am by PD Administrator

Regular PD reader Bruce sent along an interesting piece from The Politico that some GOP pundits think that (brace yourself for this) Hillary Clinton may be right and that McCain could beat Barack Obama by a margin greater than Dubbya beat John Kerry in 2004.

Among the 10 strategists interviewed by Politico for this story, there was near-uniform belief that had any other Republican been nominated, the party’s prospects in November would be nil.

“No disrespect to the other candidates,” said GOP pollster Glen Bolger, “but if anyone else had been nominated we’d be toast.”

Whoda thunk it?

    “Whoda thunk it?” Right. Everyone.
    Anyway, new article, old news.

Are these the same pundits that thought McCain’s campaign was dead last fall, hillary was on her way to a coronation, etc? Thought so. November is a long way away and unless McCain gives people a reason to vote FOR him as opposed to AGAINST the more liberal candidate he is in trouble. John Kerry is a prime example of a campaign run based on “Vote for me: You may not like me but i am better than my opponent”

The rubber meets the road and Joe-Sixpack and Winecooler Jane register their votes come November. The MAJORITY of the voters think the race is almost OVER and that the candidates are Obama and Hillary… Most of the US public still hasn’t tuned in to Nov 08 yet.

Current internal polling is suggesting the November win will be more than expected.

  5. Bruce on 28.05.2008 at 17:30 (Reply)

I recall this time last year the McCain Campaign being pronounced terminal and not going to make it past September 07… that was then and this is now.

Reversals in fortune are all quite calculated to encourage the belief in “the show”.

Does Obama have the nomination? Technically not yet. And Obama has five more long months to make mistakes.

Remember, Vote None of the Above November 08!

    1. Brian H on 28.05.2008 at 19:08 (Reply)

Why do you follow the election? I wouldnt watch a bad baseball game between two bad teams I dont like hoping they both lose. One will win, but I dont have to watch. I wont watch bad baseball and then complain the entire game how much I hate both teams.

If you were truely dedicated to your “none of the above” proposition you would remove yourself from the political process all together and focus on who wins “So You Think You Can Dance”.

I like J-Mac, I always have. Toby likes Obama, he always will. We both accept the reality that either his candidate or mine will be the next President. We both understand that elections have consequences. I cant understand how anyone who claims to care about their country could make themselves become an insignificant factor while pretending it is for the greater good. How one could not realize that one of these two men will be making life and death decisions that effect “real” peoples lives and not have a voice on which man it should be is not only sad, it is (I’LL SAY IT) unpatriotic.

Toby or Brian’s candidate will win in November? You been smokin’ stuff with Whodat, Brian?!?

Barr is going to pull off the upset win. **THAT** is what the GOP needs to realize that they moved to the dark side (acting like DEMS).

        1. Brian H on 29.05.2008 at 12:18 (Reply)

OK dw. Thanks for clarfying that for us. Not sure how to hold a discussion with someone who has a premise that is so far gone from reality.

Maybe PD should post a lesson on the electoral college system to educate some of us on the election process. Ross Perot got 19% of the popular vote in 1991 and received the same amount as electors as I did, zero.

I wait with anticipation for a Barr victory in 08, along with this Saturday’s Texas Lotto numbers.

The Republican brand is in baaaaddddd shape.

Funny how Republican Mac-haters believe J-Mac should groval to them when he is polling 15-20 points higher than they are. Ironic how J-Mac has become the only one who has a chance at saving the party.

    1. Troy La Mana on 29.05.2008 at 13:10 (Reply)

If you think J-Mac is going to save the party then the party isn’t worth saving.

      1. Brian H on 29.05.2008 at 13:34 (Reply)

Maybe the party is not worth saving, but I can think of a few things that are……

        1. The unborn, ban on partial birth abortions
        2. America not losing a war
        3. The Supreme Court
        4. The War on Terror
        4. The Patriot Act
        5. NSA wiretaps of bad guys who want me dead
        6. American strength
        7. Not having unconditional talks with Iram, Cuba, Venezuela, etc. etc. without preconditions
        8. My current Health Care policy
        9. My pocketbook
        10. Low Taxes

Since these things ARE important to me, I value them enough to remove myself from my soapbox in order to see to it that the candidate most likely to preserve these things should win in November.

        1. dw on 29.05.2008 at 13:50 (Reply)

Brian, I am in agreement with you on things worth saving. I just don’t think the GOP is the party that can do it.

Why are you such an ardent GOP supporter? They have strayed so much since Newt’s contract…

But, you are wrong about Barr’s chances to win. Your odds of winning the lotto are better ;-)

However, I still hope Barr will be a wake-up call to the GOP. And, I also hope he gets enough polling to make it into debates to get the fairtax into the limelight.

        2. Brian H on 29.05.2008 at 15:12 (Reply)

I too agree with you dw, about 99%. I dont disagree with you ideologicaly on much and I I too realize that the GOP has strayed from the days of Newt and the Contract. I simply have come to believe that even a disfunctional GOP is better than a functional Obama with a Dem controlled congress. I have made a strategic decision based on what I believe to be the only choice in this election. The GOP has a primary where those within the party can make statements to the party about its failures and direction. Once statements have been made I feel it best to support the party nominee who will do the best at defending “most” of the key issues I care about.
I just dont have it in me to sacrifice key issues in an effort to “wake up” the GOP.

I do mind Barr being in the debates because his presence will be used by the media Bush-haters and the libs to beat up on the war, Bush, and Mac. Debates should be open to those who have a chance at being President. I dont want a 10 candidate debate with Mac, Obama, Nader,

        3. dw on 29.05.2008 at 15:40 (Reply)

IMNHO, sticking to a party line, just to prevent the other party from winning, is not going to cause the party to change. Both parties are so out of touch with the voters that only a massive uprising (ie voting independent, libertarian, etc.) is going to get their attention.

And, quite frankly, the country is not going to fall apart regardless of which party wins. Look at how many people said they would go to Canada when Bush won. Did the USA crumble as they predicted? Likewise, Clinton did not cause the USA to cease to exist as we know it. Oh, and FWIW, Reagen, as great of a POTUS as he was, was not perfect. He was not my first choice…

Both the Dems and GOP make the same mistakes - too much government and too much pork. It’s time for a **REAL**tm change.

Vote for someone outside the GOP/DEM and vote often ;-)

        4. Brian H on 29.05.2008 at 18:41 (Reply)

The country may not fall apart, but more defensless babies WILL be murdered in brutal procedures if Obama wins.

My vote will reflect my desire to keep that from happening.

        5. dw on 29.05.2008 at 19:29 (Reply)

Serious question: how will an Obama win result in more abortions? Abortion is already legal…

  8. WilliamK on 29.05.2008 at 07:19 (Reply)

I think McCain can’t win on his own. I think his ability to win in 08 is going to hinge on his VP choice. A lot of the campaign will be “McCain and X” vs Democratic prez nom.

  9. HD on 29.05.2008 at 15:15 (Reply)

    This is a non-article, the first sentence tells you everything, or let me paraphrase;

This dude who saw something on an internet sight, forwarded it on to these guys who have a website loosely based on politics, that said that some guys in GOP party who talk a lot say that this Liberal guy on a so called conservative ticket could beat this other Liberal guy on the more so Liberal ticket by a wide margin, and this chick also on the Liberal ticket agrees.

Wonderful, now can we get on to something more substantial?
..And you guys want people to write content for your sight, free.. hmm you seem to get what you pay for (or don’t pay for).

    1. Brian H on 29.05.2008 at 18:58 (Reply)

You are so right HD. Maybe PoliticalDerby should only post specifics like “Hope” and “Change”.

Thanks for your input HD…I guess your name is High Definition. Thanks for being specific.

    2. David Kaiser on 29.05.2008 at 19:39 (Reply)

And of course your contribution is so stellar, so amazing that we should just shut down the site (And no, it’s not sight, it’s site, you see with sight. Then again, you may not quite grasp that concept)

      You want substantial?

You either have a bone to pick with this site (yes, site, not sight) or you are just so bored you are just picking on people who are trying to talk about politics and have some fun with it.

Oops, we can’t pay you. Hell, I don’t get paid and I’m having a blast.

Sorry we can’t seem to help you pay your bills.

      1. Brian H on 30.05.2008 at 07:10 (Reply)

Hey David. I would like a pay increase ASAP, please sir. I am an unrestricted free agent, my agent will be contacting you with our offer.

Since I am the A-Rod of this sight(site) I believe negotiations should begin around a 10 year, $250 million contract. I am sure you agree.

        Sincerely,

        Brian H

          A-Rod of the site Bri?

You do realize A-Rod has never won a World Series?

          ;)

True David, but as a Houston Astro fan it took us 35 years to get to the 2nd round of the playioffs.

“There’s no crying in baseball!”……or politics

Yah, my Phillies beat the ‘Stros in one of the greatest NLCSes ever in 1980.

It still amazing that Nolan Ryan blew a lead late in game five.

    Things NOT worth saving:

    1. The Patriot Act and all its little off-spring
    2. Homeland Security and all its illegitimate spawn
    3. A Gi-Normous federal bureaucracy
    4. The US Dept of Education
    5. The US BLM and half of the USFS
    6. Secret service protection for Jimmy Carter
    7. 85% of the IRS tax code
    8. Obama bin Laden
    10. The current two party political system
    11. The Transportation Security Administration

    Things worth saving:

    1. The Constitutional Rights of U.S. Citizens
    2. The Unborn (our future generations)
    3. The US economy
    4. Our borders
    5. Our culture
    6. Our language
    7. Our good will among the community of nations
    8. The Judeo-Christian fabric of our national culture
    9. Our generosity
    10. Our compassion as a people

    1. Brian H on 29.05.2008 at 18:47 (Reply)

Please explain how an Obama victory in 2008 will accomplish any of that.

By the way…….#6 is right on the money.

      1. David Kaiser on 29.05.2008 at 19:30 (Reply)

That is beneath both of you. I have no love for Carter as a President, but implying his assassination is pathetic.

After reading Brian H again, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he means #6 in the second list.

        That doesn’t excuse “Brother Jonathan”.

The fact that you even said that is sad.

        1. Brian H on 29.05.2008 at 22:21 (Reply)

I was not implying Carter’s assassination, it was a joke.

I will give the obligatory political apology.

“I apologize if my words offended anyone.”

To correct the record. I do believe that Carter should have secret service protection.

        2. David Kaiser on 30.05.2008 at 08:01 (Reply)

Hehe, I was mostly messing with both of you in light of the Hillary/RFK statement.

Still, I get a little iffy when people hint that someone should be dead. Dead is so boring!

        3. Brian H on 30.05.2008 at 12:38 (Reply)

Thanks David. I appreciate the fact that the PD administrators dont want PD to become a LOON-Lounge like the Huffington Post, Koz, and Move-On. I understand your sentiments completely. Thanks for holding up the satndard.
