Because it’s a horserace…

News flash - Thompson says he’s “not interested in running for President”

Posted on December 29th, 2007 at 11:49 pm by David Kaiser, Editor

The comments from day one about the Fred Thompson for President campaign have been that he lacked the “fire in the belly” to run for President.

He didn’t have the resolve to campaign hard, to schmooze and fund raise like the rest of the candidates.

The latest one takes the cake.

The CNN political ticker give us these enlightening quotes from the man who was once considered the dream candidate by many conservatives and Reagan Republicans:

“I’m not particularly interested in running for president,” the former senator said at a campaign event in Burlington when challenged by a voter over his desire to be commander-in-chief.

“But I think I’d make a good president,” Thompson continued. “I have the background, capability, and concern to do this and I’m doing it for the right reasons.”

I mean for Pete’s sake Fred, even if you aren’t interested, while you’re still in the race, have the freaking intelligence to not tell anyone!

With that quote, Fred has quickly moved to number one on my list of GOP candidates to bow out after Iowa and New Hampshire are done.

See ya Fred, we hardly knew ya!

Then I guess it was a wise move for me to move from Fred to Ron. At least one of the two wants to be President and uphold the Constitution.

Number one? I could’ve sworn that that spot was reserved for Alan Keyes, but if Thompson REALLY doesn’t want it…

I’m not a Fred guy, and the link to read the article is bad, but is it possible that this was taken out of context? Could he have been saying that he is not interested in the RUNNING, i.e. the process of campaigning, but he is interested in BEING President? Not trying to defend him, just a thought.

Russ, it very well could be that the quote could be taken out of context. But even if he isn’t interested in the process of running for President, it sends up all kinds of red flags for me.

It’s like not wanting to interview for a job and expecting it to be handed to you.

Go back to bed, Fred. I think he’s still polling somewhere in the double digits, and those extra votes could really be better utilized by a viable (and more awake)candidate.

Taken out of context, probably. Unclear, certainly. Still disconcerting and reinforcing what people already assumed about him, most definitely.

The only way I could imagine this spun positively is to claim that Fred was trying for that 18th century thing of not wanting to run, but reluctantly accepting to do so as everyone else pushes him into it. Weak.

The link is back up (CNN posts that they were having tech difficulties) and the whole article doesn’t sound any better. Another quote:

“I’m only consumed by a few things and politics is not one of them.”

Don’t we want the President to make politics at least one of his few top priorities?

Here’s the race after Iowa on January 3rd - Romney, McCain, and Giuliani followed by Huckabee….with Thompson, Hunter, and Paul out of the race for good! The next one to leave will be Huckabee, with a three-man race down to Romney - McCain - Giuliani.

    G’bye Fred!

I am begining to believe you that Thompson and/or will bail out after Iowa but don’t expect Paul to leave any time soon.

I agree with Russ. Whether he was ever serious or not, Fred was just playing coy in those remarks…as he has from day one.

Personally, I hope he stays in to dilute the neo-con vote.
