Stephen and I chatted with several high-level operatives at CLC and the common thread was shock that Fred has disappeared from the campaign trail. This AP piece covers the issue well.

Has Fred already started to question the wisdom of entering the race? Is he running out of steam a month after announcing? One well-placed campaign veteran (not officially associated with any campaign) wondered aloud whether Fred would even make it through January.

some stats that i found REALLY surprising were that al gore was elected and reelected to his senate seat with 60.7 and 69.6 percent of the vote respectively, whereas fred thompson only won that same seat with 61.4 and 60.4 percent. i had no idea gore used to be so popular in tennessee, even more than fred.

i don’t think he ever wanted to campaign… he jumped in with the assumption that he would take it easy. if he coasted in, its all good. if he doesn’t win, he probably gets paid more for future acting gigs

    I called illness months back.

I hope he is not ill, but it explains a lot.

It does raise eyebrows. Where is he?

Surprise, surprise, I couldn’t agree more! I don’t think Fred EVER wanted to get in this race. I think his handlers beat him to death with the idea that he could just throw his name on the ballot and they would see to it that he won. His heart isn’t in this. You can see it.
