Because it’s a horserace…

He’s outta there!

Posted on July 14th, 2007 at 7:06 pm by Stephen Fountain, Editor

Exhibiting greater tea reading ability that John McCain, former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore has announced that he is dropping his presidential bid.

Gilmore said he has been approached about running for Virginia governor a second time, and about running for U.S. Senate if Sen. John W. Warner (R) retires. Gilmore said he will consider both options. Reflecting his long-held interest in Old Dominion politics, he said he will start a political action committee to support Republicans running for the state senate and House of Delegate.

Of course the BIG question now is who will pick up both of Gilmore’s supporters? The scrum is on!

    Mr. Wright,

I suggest you run for president and make a play for both Gilmore supporters!

At least this way McCain can say he didn’t leave the race first.

Next to go….Tommy Thompson…McCain…Paul…Trancedo…Huckabee…Brownback - not necessarilly in that order. Ron Paul is the longest of longshots and doesn’t even stand a chance.

You’re right Paul doesn’t stand a chance, but he’s not going anywhere. He’s not in the race to win, he’s in to have a bigger spotlight on his issues than he’s ever had. He’s in this thing for the long haul. Tancredo probably sticks it out too. McCain? Who knows. Money may force him out, but if he can keep enough in the bank to put fuel in the bus he probably sticks around until February. The others, however, are all likely to fold up shop sooner than later.

The lowest of the lower tiers always stick around ’til the end.

Ron Paul has a better chance than anyone else whose name isn’t Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson or John McCain, though, I must say.

    Couple of thoughts …

Has Gilmore ever been approached by any Virginians? I mean those not of the Virginia GOP mandarin class because among rank and file Gilmore was pretty much considered a POS governor across the board with few accomplishments and many disappointments. Who is he kidding? Gilmore is the real architect of the ongoing Democratic takeover and the thought of him helping to further wreck what modicum of legitimacy (however residual) the VA GOP has left is scary. Then again, I’d love to see him run a primary against Bob McDonnell and get his clock cleaned.

Also, I imagine Huckabee will stick it out and play the part of the potential veep. He’d be a perfect running mate for someone with less than sterling conservative credentials but robust on foreign policy … (cough Guiliani)
