In response to Jason’s recent post, my thinking on McCain’s primary chances has been conflicted for some time. On the one hand, it seems that McCain’s maverick ways and beef with the religious right means he just can’t win the nomination.
But more and more, Giuliani and Romney’s “evolving positions†on abortion and other social issues are making McCain look like the only genuine guy in the race. At some point, a segment of the Republican Party has to say, “Wait a minute, there’s an electable war hero who is firmly anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage?â€
Erick Erickson, the editor of RedState, says if the election were held today, he’d back McCain. As Hotline points out:
Kind of significant when the proprietor of one of the most widely read conservative websites officially ditches Mitt Romney and admits that, if the election were held today, he’d vote for a guy he once said he’d never vote for: John McCain.
