All I want for Christmas is Iowa and New Hampshire
Posted on April 4th, 2007 at 3:54 pm by Contributor ArchiveRumblings are growing louder that Iowa and New Hampshire might move their caucus and primary, respectively, to December. The Granite State ain’t happy about having whipper-snapper Nevada jumping in on its action, and has made noises indicating that it won’t relinquish the No. 2 spot on the calendar. And if New Hampshire jumps up, Iowa will follow suit in order to stay eight days ahead.
With the timing of the holidays, that makes early to mid-December look like the ideal time for the two states that traditionally lead off the primary race. Then other states would effectively have to wait about a month. There’s a potential image problem with this move, however, which would be the contrast between the uplifting holiday season and the nastiness of primary politics.
Do people really want Santa and Mrs. Claus to share the spotlight with Bill and Hill? Would they feel comfortable with Rudy and Cruella Judi taking some attention away from Frosty and Rudolph? And little children might be afraid that Newt Gingrich really would steal Christmas. I think the big winner from this could be Dennis Kucinich, who appears to actually be an elf. If he put on green tights, winged booties, and a pointy hat, he might just get enough media attention to edge out Joe Biden for sixth place. Ho ho ho!
