Ruh-roh Rudy! Giuliani judges were no Scalias or Alitos

Posted on March 1st, 2007 at 4:13 am by Contributor Archive

Oh well, Rudy Giuliani’s primary numbers were getting too high, anyway. This expose on the judges he appointed as mayor of New York should reel them back down some.

Giuliani has been trying to reassure Republicans that despite his decidedly left-leaning views on certain issues they care about, he would appoint judges whose rulings would make them happy. Judges like Antonin Scalia or Samuel Alito. Well, out of the 75 judges he appointed, Democrats outnumbered Republicans by more than 8 to 1. One was an officer of the International Association of Lesbian and Gay Judges. Giuilani’s judicial appointments even won praise from Kelli Conlin, head of NARAL Pro-Choice New York, the state’s leading abortion-rights group, who described these judges as “decent, moderate people.”

This record coming to light seems sure to create a real dilemma for would-be Rudy voters. It very likely will make it much harder for Republicans who want to believe they can really trust Giuliani to abandon his principles and personal values when it comes to appointing judges. His history strongly indicates that his priorities are not at all in line with those of social conservatives, and once he has their votes, he’s likely to do whatever he wants.

I wonder … do you suppose Rudy already has Harriet Miers’ phone number on speed dial?
